The sixth annual survey looks at the changes that energy companies are making in their software, automation, AI, and cloud computing

Cargas Energy has released the results of their Tech Trends Survey for 2025. It turns out that energy companies are embracing new or improved technologies, with increased utilization of tank monitors, artificial intelligence, software and more. The full report is available at Cargas.com.

Artificial Intelligence

Nearly half of the respondents were uncertain about AI’s role in fuel delivery, but many others saw its potential for routing, customer communications and tank monitoring. Many companies mistakenly identified today’s tank monitoring as an AI product they are using. While tank monitors automate delivery schedules, they are not, yet, AI. However, Cargas noted that in the future, they could use AI to evaluate historical data and identify unusual usage patterns.

Dispatch and Delivery

According to the Cargas report, almost 88 percent of respondents use fuel delivery software in some capacity. The data shows an increased urgency to replace outdated software, with a four percent higher rate of respondents willing to replace software as soon as this year compared to the 2024 survey.

These companies are also using a diverse array of technology to manage their business process, with tank monitors, office software suites, payroll, credit card processing, and others being used in tandem. Two-thirds of the respondents are using a mobile solution of some sort.

Tank Monitors

Tank monitors are one of the most popular tools used by fuel delivery companies, because they are more reliable than K-factors and create a pool of historical data to evaluate tank efficiency. It appears that, on average, a ticket pull is triggered when tanks are at approximately 35 percent. More than 70 percent of the respondents deployed or spent more on monitors last year than in the past, and fewer retailers are not using any form of tank monitoring. No companies reported removing or reducing their spending on monitors.

Business Intelligence

Business intelligence (BI) tools are enabling fuel businesses to evaluate their performance with BI reporting in fuel delivery and accounting software, and still reduce manual consolidation of data.Cargas gave the companies a chance to create a wish list of applications, and they asked for advanced operational tools, improved synchronization between systems, marketing integration, and “something” with artificial intelligence, even though they don’t know what that might be.

With the increase in digital operations, fuel delivery companies are investing in security measures, with 38.24 percent employing in-house IT, 18.63 percent utilizing a managed service security provider, and 37.25 percent utilizing a combination of the two. The good news is that 84.31 percent of respondents have not experienced a cybersecurity breach, and of those that did, 75 percent did not lose business or revenue.

Sales and Marketing

While 98 percent of companies still acquire most new customers by word of mouth and referrals, they are also increasing their use of social media, software, and marketing automations to expand their consumer outreach and personalization. Email marketing is a preferred option for companies to offer special pricing, company updates and newsletters, seasonal reminders and more.

Customer service reps are the backbone of the industry, with phones and emails being the main tools utilized, but VoIP, social media, and chat tools are also relied upon.

Self-service options – especially online bill pay and fuel delivery and service requests – are offered by 79 percent and 70 percent respectively. These services are offered via company websites, third-party portals, and mobile apps, with 57 percent of companies offering multiple resources to their customers.
