NYOHA Hosts Soy Bean Growers

The New York Oil Heating Association (NYOHA) recently played host to some of the soybean farmers and biodiesel producers who are helping to put New York City on the cutting edge of clean heating and transportation.

Delegates from the National Biodiesel Board (NBB), the Nebraska Soybean Board, the United Soybean Board and several other state soybean organizations visited New York City in December to see biodiesel in action in fleets and a local high school.

New York City has replaced traditional heating oil with a blend of heating oil and biodiesel and also uses biodiesel widely in city vehicle fleets. The move to biodiesel is part of the City’s Climate Change initiative, which has a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by the year 2050.

NYOHA CEO Rocco Lacertosa, NBB Petroleum Liaison Paul Nazzaro, and several NYOHA members escorted the visitors on a tour to see some of the different ways the City is using biodiesel. The tour included visits to a Sprague Energy terminal and a New York City Police Department fleet facility. The delegates also participated in a demonstration at the Bronx Design and Construction Academy, where students are learning the science of Bioheat® Fuel as part of an interdisciplinary approach to HVAC.
