Cost of Propane Heating Rises by More Than Half

Households that heat with propane have been hit hard by this winter’s rising prices, which were brought on by a combination of factors, including a large drawdown in the Midwest to dry a very wet corn harvest and then, of course, the polar vortex. When all is said and done, propane customers can expect to spend 54 percent more on heat this winter, according to a report this week by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

The report says this year’s price increases hit everyone, including heating oil customers, who are seeing a cost increase of 7 percent, and natural gas users, who are paying 10 percent more. Electric-heated homes are seeing a 5 percent increase.

In an upcoming post, we’ll provide degree day information for various locations around the country and see how this year’s rugged winter compares to last year.
