Automatic Setback Without the Programming
Honeywell’s new Lyric™ thermostat brings unprecedented comfort, flexibility and precision to the realm of programmable thermostats by replacing fixed setback scheduling with mode-switching based on the homeowner’s actual comings and goings.
Unlike other devices that use a fixed schedule, the Lyric moves in an out of setback mode based on the movements of the homeowner’s smartphone, which is detected using a GPS technology known as geofencing.
When homeowner leaves the home with their smartphone, the thermostat switches to setback mode. As they are returning, it switches to full comfort mode, so that the home is ready when they arrive.
Here is a look at some key details of the Lyric’s operation.
Geofencing: Using GPS technology, Honeywell defines the home as the “geofenced” area. Setback operation begins when the smartphone exits the home. The switch back into comfort mode occurs as the smartphone is returning. The distance from the geofence at which the switch occurs is customizable by the homeowner.
Multiple smartphones: The homeowner can program multiple smartphones with the Lyric app. As long as any registered smartphone is in the home, the Lyric remains in Home mode. When the last one leaves, it switches to Away mode. Once one smartphone is detected returning to the home, the Lyric switches to Home mode. If the home is occupied while all registered smartphones are away, such as when a guest is staying over, the setback can be manually overridden at the thermostat.
Setup: Step-by-step installation instructions are provided in the Lyric app. Steps include logging into the WiFi network; setting the comfort parameters; adding smartphone accounts; and registering with Honeywell.
Remote operation: The homeowner can control the Lyric from their smartphone anywhere they can connect to the Internet. The smartphone can also be used as an HVAC remote control.
Fine Tune: Equipped with a humidity sensor, the Lyric considers temperature, humidity and outdoor temperature when setting the comfort level. It can work with a universal humidifier, dehumidifier or vent.
Smart Cues: The Lyric prompts the homeowner when high and low temperature thresholds are crossed and when the air filter needs changing. Honeywell expects to develop more Smart Cues and update the Lyric app to include them.
Shortcuts: The Lyric offers event-based scheduling, so the home can have custom settings for a party, workout or other designated events.
Weather: At the touch of a button, the Lyric displays current outdoor conditions and the predicted weather for the next 12 hours.
The Display: When the homeowner walks up to the Lyric thermostat, a built-in proximity sensor signals the display to turn on and show current temperature and the home’s heating or cooling status. A halo of light in orange (heating), blue (cooling), or green (away/energy savings) momentarily illuminates around the thermostat to indicate it is making temperature adjustments. Additionally, touch-sensitive buttons flank the center display – one for accessing weather information, and one for setting back the temperature.
Compatibility: The Lyric is compatible with Apple smart phones and tablets using iOS 6 and above, as well as Android smart phones and tablets using Gingerbread 2.3.4 and above. The App is available from the iTunes store and Google Play.
Battery: Lyric uses one AAA Lithium battery.
